Accolades
Year-to-year, Écluse continues to receive outstanding awards and accolades from Wine Enthusiast, Vinous, The Wine Advocate, the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, and the San Francisco International Wine Competition, and for that we are very grateful.
Our 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon received the Sweepstakes Award for the Best Red Wine from the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, the largest competition of American wines in the world! Our wines continue to receive Best of Class, Double Gold, Gold and Silver medals each year. We are honored our wines continue to receive such exciting accolades but the continuous support and positive feedback from our fans and members means the most to us. Cheers!

The 2019 Ensemble has a medium ruby-purple color and aromas of fresh blackberries, lavender and graphite. The medium-bodied palate is silky and seamless with layers of spice and floral perfume and a long finish. It may benefit from another 2-3 years in the cellar.
2019 Cabernet Sauvignon - 93 pts
Medium ruby-purple, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is scented of Morello cherries, lavender, charcuterie and graphite. The medium-bodied palate is grainy and refreshing with bright, crunchy fruits and a long, spicy finish. It's very pretty and very drinkable!

Medium ruby, the 2019 Rendition features red and black berries with touches of fallen leaves, dark spices and citrus peel. The medium-bodied palate is soft and juicy with pleasantly earthy fruits and a persistent, spicy finish.
2019 Syrah - 92 pts
Medium ruby, the 2019 Syrah is bursting with scents of briary fruit accents of licorice, cardamom, potpourri, cracked pepper and charcuterie. Medium-bodied, firm yet rounded, the palate is seamless and spicy with a refreshing finish. It's a balanced Syrah that drinks well now but could age for 5-7+ years.

2015 Ensemble – 93 Points
A Bordeaux blend dominated by Petit Verdot, the 2015 Ensemble offers up a deep bouquet of ripe black fruits, violets and asphalt. On the palate, it's full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, with ripe tannins and a generous core of fruit that avoids excess. Lavish and generous in profile, this is a dramatic wine from Ecluse Wines. Drink Date 2018-2024
-William Kelley
2015 Insider – 93 Points
An unusual blend of 25% Tannat, 25% Petit Verdot, 25% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc, the 2015 Insider is another success for Ecluse Wines, wafting from the glass with aromas of cassis, truffle, tobacco leaf and subtle new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and mouthfilling, with good balance and considerable presence, but I preferred the Ensemble for its greater energy and length. Drink Date 2018-2024
-William Kelley
2015 Rendition – 93 Points
The 2015 Rendition Proprietary Red Wine is very pretty, wafting from the glass with notes of violets, sweet black fruits, rose petal and spice. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, supple and open-knit, with an ample core of crunchy, bright fruit, good balancing acidity and a long, gently tannic finish. It's a blend of 46% Syrah, 38% Grenache, 8% Mourvèdre and 8% Petite Sirah. Drink Date 2018-2024
-William Kelley
2014 Cabernet Sauvignon – 93 Points
The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon offers up notes of crushed currants, pencil shavings, sweet spices and creamy new oak, followed by a full-bodied, layered palate with good concentration, rich tannins and freshness. It wouldn't be out of place in contemporary Napa Valley. Drink Date 2018-2024
-William Kelley

2015 Improv – 92 Points
A blend of 47% Merlot, 29% Petite Sirah and 24% Petit Verdot, the 2015 Improv offers up a brooding bouquet of grilled meat, espresso roast and ripe blackberries. On the palate, it's rich, full-bodied and chewy, with some firm structuring tannins but a generous core of ripe, crunchy fruit. Drink Date 2018-2024

This is a Petite Sirah to sit on while the tannins mellow out a bit. The dense structure holds espresso, dark chocolate and a ripe blackberry sensation. Drink 2018 through 2023.

Affairs of the Vine’s Wine Shootout process for scoring wines is incredibly comprehensive. They focus on specific types of wines, in this case Rhone wines, while utilizing a diverse tasting panel comprised of wine industry professionals.
The judging panel, an incredibly diverse panel of 62 wine professionals, tasted 261 wines over a three month period. Just 32 wines were tasted by the experts per day, allowing the judges to be completely immersed, focused and fair to each wine and palate fatigue is not a factor. The wines were tasted completely blind without knowing the appellation, vintage or price of each wine. Each wine submitted was tasted a minimum of two times and the top rated wines were then tasted blind by the panel of experts at the Rhone Shootout Finals on June 15, 2013 to determine the best of the best.
And the results....
Écluse medaled for all wines entered at the 2nd Annual Rhone Shootout!!!
DOUBLE GOLD - 2010 Écluse "Improv" Lock Vineyard

92 Points - 2009 Écluse Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, Lock Vineyard
The trick to getting a Cabernet Sauvignon this ripe and oaky is to provide balance, and in this, Écluse has succeeded. Made from 100% Cabernet, it’s enormously rich in blackberries and black currants, with dark chocolate, licorice and spice adding complexity. The tannins are, in a word, gorgeous. With high alcohol, the mouthfeel has a Cognac-like warmth, but doesn’t feel uncomfortably hot. Drink now for fresh fruitiness. - S.H.
91 Points - 2010 Écluse Cabernet Sauvignon, Lock Vineyard
California Cabernet simply doesn’t get richer or riper than this. It explodes with blackberry and cherry jam and chocolate flavors whose sweetness persists into the long, spicy finish. And yet the wine is technically dry. Drink over the next few years. - S.H.
90 Points - 2010 Écluse Syrah, Lock Vineyard
A beautiful Syrah, softly tannic, dry and full bodied. High alcohol gives some jalapeño pepper heat to the blackberries, licorice, bacon, dark chocolate and sandalwood flavors, but nothing that richly sauced barbecue can’t handle. Drink up. - S.H.
90 Points - 2010 Écluse "Ensemble", Lock Vineyard
This is one of the best Bordeaux blends now available from Paso Robles. Based on Cabernet Sauvignon, it’s enormously ripe in blackberry jam, currant, chocolate and cedar flavors that finish lush and spicy. The tannins are strong, but negotiable with barbecue. - S.H.

Affairs of the Vine’s Wine Shootout process for scoring wines is incredibly comprehensive. They focus on specific types of wines, in this case Rhone wines, while utilizing a diverse tasting panel comprised of wine industry professionals.
The first ever Rhone Shootout began with a series of blind tastings over a six week period as the wines were tasted in groups of 32 wines max per day – this way each wine can be tasted with clarity and concentration without palate fatigue. The top wines were then tasted blind to determine the best of the best. The process and manner utilized by Affairs of the Vine for assessing and judging entries is unique within competitions in that it employs the following procedures:
• All wines are tasted blind. (How could you ever do it differently?)
• All wines are tasted without reference to producer, appellation or price.
• Each wine is judged and reviewed on its own merit.
• All wines are tasted by at least two tasting panels before the finals.
• The wines were placed into flights and evaluated by a team of judges. Each team reviewed only 32 wines.
And the results....

The 2009 Improv (59% Syrah, 41% Zinfandel) saturates the palate with layers of dark fruit, smoke, espresso, licorice and spices. It is a big wine, with considerable inner sweetness and ripeness, yet it is also beautifully balanced. The Zinfandel comes through loud and clear, especially on the finish. The estate gave the Improv 18 months in oak barrels, 50% new, with a preference for American and Hungarian oak in the Zinfandel components and went into bottle with no fining or filtration.

The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Shootout ÉCLUSE RESULTS!!
2006 Écluse “Ensemble”
Rating: 95 Points = "Love at First Sip"
Female: Inky in color. This is a very masculine wine - dark, deep and dry. The mouth-feel is satiny through mid-palate. Tannins join in and carry through the finish. This could be "red velvet" with maturity.
Male: Mint, herbs and blackberry aromas with hints of spice, Broad black fruit flavors on opening through mid-palate where the tannins kick-in. The finish is tight. Should age well.
2005 Écluse Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Lock Vineyard
Rating: 94 Points = "Love at First Sip"
Female: Brooding aromas of dark cherry, campfire and cocoa lead to big dark berry flavors highlighted by chocolate, tobacco and olive notes. Licorice on the intriguing finish of this well made wine. Pair with a grilled rosemary steak.

My two favorite offerings from Ecluse are their 2005 and 2006 Renditions, both complex blends of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre. The 2006 Rendition (59% Syrah, 32% Grenache, and 9% Mourvedre) reveals gamy, meaty, earthy notes intermixed with root vegetables, sweet cherry, roasted herb, and spice characteristics. It is a fruity, spicy, earthy, and concentrated.

My two favorite offerings from Ecluse are their 2005 and 2006 Renditions, both complex blends of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre. The 2005 Rendition (46% Syrah, 39% Grenache, and 15% Mourvedre) possesses more sweet berry fruit, less spice and meatiness, deeper, more concentrated flavors, and a combination of power as well as elegance. Its purity and sweetness of fruit are striking compared to the spicy, earthy 2006.
